MD

I had my ultrasound today, unfortunately I won't know anything until I see the doctor. The worst part was having to drink 32 ounces of water and hold it for over an hour. In the meantime, I'm trying to read up on PCOS. There's definitely a lot out there about it and it definitely affects a lot of women. The doctor seemed to think my case was only mild, but enough to making conceiving difficult on our own. Metformin, the drug Dr. Powell first mentioned, is the most common drug in treating PCOS. I'm going to try to get in to see Dr Powell sooner than the 11th. I have a feeling Nathan's test will prove to be fine. And the odds of us both having something that's causing us trouble is unlikely. The only thing is that Metformin is known to have some not so wonderful side effects, so its usually prescribed at a low dose and gradually increased. But I have full faith in my doctor (and my God) and trust that we'll overcome this hurdle.

And for those of you wondering about what exactly PCOS is its basically a condition in which hormones are out of balance and some degree of insulin resistence. Its not known the cause of PCOS, but they believe its caused by hormone changes and that it tends to run in families on either the mother or father's side. There are several symptoms and it tends to be a fairly broad and confusing condition. Treatment includes treating the symptoms as well as the use of drugs to regulate hormones and insulin. And of course diet and excersise. I also read that having PCOS makes losing weight more challenging, but I'm hoping to work with my doctor to establish a specific plan to help me in this area. I imagine it'll include a diet low in sugar and carbs.

If you have anyother questions about PCOS, let me know. I'm really trying to educate myself and understand what I need to do to overcome the challenges of having PCOS. And I read online (I know I know you can't believe everything you read online) on a few different websites that Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) also has PCOS, so there's a little celebrity fun fact for ya.

Hey Kelly,

I wanted to let you know about a blog that I read called My Happy Little Life (http://kellymccaleb.typepad.com/my_happy_little_life/). Kelly, the blog's owner, has PCOS, and while she doesn't always blog about it, she's had a couple of interesting posts about it recently. So I just thought I'd let you know.

Dave and I are definitely praying for you!

Kelly-
I keep up with your blog regularly and I have been reading every post about trying to conceive. I know that I cannot understand what you are feeling in your struggle, but from the outside, I see so many blessings reaffirmed in your posts-1) a loving husband who wants what you want and who is consistently there for you 2) an opportunity to LOVE a child and teach him/her about God-something they may not get anywhere else in the foster care program 3) a growing trust in God's Will for your life 4) a growing appreciation for the blessing of a child, regardless of whether or not it is biologically yours. I KNOW that all of these things are working together in your heart to prepare you for what God has planned....just keep trusting Him and staying open with Nathan!
